Feminist characters in Harry Potter
Feminist reading of Harmione’s character in Harry Potter: How do the character portrayal of Harmione and other female characters support feminist discourse?
According to me, Harry Potter have female characters who represent modern era as well as confidence which women all around require. As well known feminist Gayatri Spivak said "Can subaltern speak?" but here Rowling represented that subaltern can speak because subaltern term used for women by and large. As many writers put forward the question about women’s existence as Simone de Beauvoir’s quote for woman that, “One is not born but becomes a woman.” This all are describing women’s condition in society but we can also said that they make us aware about women’s problems.
But here in harry potter Rowling we can say that rather give us solution with all female characters in novel. Harmione’s character we can find rational and highly intellectual, she is always with books and keep reading new things and shows as more knowledgeable compare to both Ron and even Harry. Whenever question arises Harmione is there with answers. Even in last after Dumbledore’s death he leaves a book for Harmione because he has faith in her that she is able to solve puzzle which he leaves in the book for her and she proves him right after solving that which is about Deathly Hallows.
Another character is Ron’s mother Ms Weasley who is influential character throughout the novel. There are many important characters like professor McGonagall, Harry’s mother lily potter, Ginny, Luna Lovegood Nymphadora Lupin etc and all portrays as very important in novel. Even for villain’s character there is Umbridge who is shown as very powerful character.
